SOFTBALL

c Baylor 5, Hawaii 3: Baylor scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie, and Whitney Canion made it stand up for the Bears.

With runners on first and second and one out in the fifth, designated player Sarah Smith hit a one-out, RBI single to break the tie. Then Clare Hosak hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Smith to second and Linsey Hays to third.

Robin Landrith then delivered a two-out, two-run single that pushed the lead to 5-2.

Canion (13-3) gave up three runs on three hits to win. She struck out 11 and walked two.

Landrith led the Bears at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Kelsi Kettler went 2-for-3, and Kathy Shelton went 2-for-4. The Bears had 11 hits.

Loie Kesterston (0-2) gave up 10 of those hits over five innings. She gave up five runs (four earned), walked two and struck out none.

All of Hawaii’s runs gave via the home run. Sharla Kleibenstein hit a two-run homer in the fourth that briefly tied the game at 2. Leisha Liilii added a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth.

Earlier in the day, Kaia Parnaby pitched a two-hit shutout in the Rainbow Wahine’s 2-0 win over Syracuse. She struck out 11, walked none and hit three.

Hawaii came through with two two-out RBI singles in the game — one from Jazmine Zamora in the fourth and another from Jessica Iwata in the fifth.

Lindsay Taylor, who also went the distance, took the loss for Syracuse (7-13). She surrendered two runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking one.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

c Cal Baptist def. Hawaii 25-19, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22: Guilherme Koepp had 16 kills and six digs, and Levi Cabral added 13 kills and eight digs in Riverside, Calif., as No. 12 Cal Baptist beat No. 10 Hawaii in the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match between the teams.

The Lancers (9-11, 6-9 MPSF) hit .260 and registered 10 aces in the match.

Sinisa Zarkovic paced Hawaii (7-13, 6-11), hitting .435 and pounding 13 kills. Brook Sedore added 11 kills and five digs, and JP Marks had 10 kills for the Warriors, who hit .268 but committed 22 service errors.

Hawaii has lost eight of its nine road matches this season.
